The Light of the East Part 2: Understanding the Eastern Catholic Churches

Toronto, June 3, 2010

Salt + Light Television, Canada’s Catholic Network, takes a look at the Eastern Catholic Churches on the Wednesday, May 26th and Saturday, May 29th episodes of their flagship show, Catholic Focus.

Ottawa may have Parliament Hill and the Rideau Canal, but one of its best-kept secrets, tucked inside St. Paul University, is the Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky Institute. In his 1995 Apostolic Letter "Orientale Lumen", Pope John Paul II encourages the development of educational programs and institutions dedicated to Eastern Christianity. The Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky Institute is the only establishment in North America that has a full program of Eastern and Western Christian Studies. Join Salt + Light host Mary Rose Bacani as she sits down with Institute Director Fr. Stephen Wojcichowsky; gets a tour of the Institute from one of the Institute professors Fr. Peter Galadza; and meets with young people and students involved in the Eastern Catholic chaplaincy and its outreach programs. She also hears the personal stories of faith from several students, including Andrew Bennett, a seminarian who came from a Roman Catholic tradition and a political career; Olenka Galadza, a Ukrainian Catholic priest’s wife and a mother; and Fr. Roman Rytsar, a priest from Ukraine who brought his young family to Ottawa for the Institute.

"Acquire education, my brothers and sisters! Strive for it earnestly – cherish it! For learning is nothing other than the recognition of truth, and it is precisely the teaching of Christ that is truth." - Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky
