100 Years of the Sisters of St. Basil in America
1911-2011

100 years ago, Bishop Soter Ortynsky, the first Eastern Catholic bishop to come to America, reached out to the Sisters of St. Basil in Yavoriv, Ukraine. He had a congregation of half a million people, and he needed help. This is the story of the 100 years of the Sisters of St. Basil, who answered the call, and came to America to minister to the needs of thousands of faithful.

A film by Mykola & Oksana Yaremko
Produced by Sister Ann Laszok, OSBM

DVD Available for $20 plus shipping and handling through the Pastoral Ministry Office.

"Come Let Us Worship" performed by the Sisters of St. Basil of Ukraine CD
The works presented here consist of hymns sung during the Divine Liturgy, Vespers and Matins, and represent a number of different styles that span several centuries. We begin with monody (chant), which had its beginnings in the Patristic Period of the 2nd to the 8th centuries, and which is represented here by "My Lord's Embrace" and "Irmos from the Great Canon of Andrew of Crete" (7th century). The hymn "It is Truly Right to Bless You" is an example of late 17th century znamenny chant. Classical Ukrainian church music from the 17th and 18th centuries is represented by works of Dmytro Bortniansky ("Our Father") and the chants of Dmytro Tuptalo ("Merciful Mother" and "I Will Bring Praise"). In the 19th and early 20th centuries composers began arranging ancient traditional choral melodies into polyphonic masterpieces, examples of which are Andrew Hnatyshynês "Blessed is the Man" and Mykola Leontovychês "Canticle of Simeon" and "Cherubimic Hymn". Choral church music of the 19th century is also represented here by Kyrylo Stetsenkoês "Thrice-Holy Hymn" and Maksym Kopkoês "Alleluia". This collection also includes the works of two Russian composers noted for their unique tonalities: Alexander Arkhangelsky ("Only Begotten Son"), and T. Rumyantseva ("Anaphora"). Our historical tour of Ukrainian sacred music concludes with two compositions of a contemporary composer, Volodymyr Fainer, whose style carries us back to Baroque polyphony ("Come, Let Us Worship" and "O Joyful Light").

The compositions are sung in Ukrainian and in Church Slavonic.

Chef and host Pavlo Czerwoniak takes the viewer, step-by-step, through each recipe, using time- and labor-saving techniques. Along with the printable recipe files provided on the DVD, the viewer will learn how to overcome the often times monumental task of putting together a traditional Ukrainian Christmas Eve meal. Some dishes are prepared in the traditional way, such as kutia (honey-sweetened wheat dish) and uzvar (dried fruit compote), while others are prepared in timesaving ways, like the dough for varenyky (potato- and cabbage-filled dumplings), meatless borshch (beet soup), ushka (mushroom-filled dumplings), fish in aspic, holubtsee (stuffed cabbage rolls), and strutslia (braided Christmas bread).

Ukrainians of the Delaware Valley Ukrainians of the Delaware Valley by Alexander Lushnycky, Ph.D
At the dawn of the 20th century, the industrializing world provided Ukrainians an opportunity to immigrate to America to lead free and honorable lives. Ukrainians of the Delaware Valley illustrates the Ukrainiansê ongoing saga, commencing with the late 19th century when they disembarked to the Delaware Valley and continuing to the present, as they gradually integrated into their American communities. The Ukrainiansê common purpose was to preserve their unique eastern culture, cherished daily customs, and elaborate traditions embalmed in the mysteries of their eastern religion in the new surroundings. Ukrainians of the Delaware Valley documents how each new generation of immigrants added to the kaleidoscope of Ukrainian communities in 17 of the boroughs of the Delaware Valley.

Alexander Lushnycky, Ph.D., a well-known educator and researcher, is one of the leading authorities on the history of Ukrainian immigration in the United States. Born in Lviv, Ukraine, he was raised in the United States. His numerous bilingual publications include Ukrainians of Pennsylvania and Ukrainians of Greater Philadelphia. He currently serves as the regional director for the Encyclopedia of Ukrainian Diaspora in the United States and is executive vice president of the Ukrainian Educational Council of the United States.

Christ Our Pascha Hard Cover Ukrainian
Christ Our Pascha
The Catechism for the Ukrainian Catholic Church is called "Christ Our Pascha" because the central idea is that the source of our Christian life of faith is the Risen Christ. Therefore, there are two fundamental resources for understanding this catechism. They are the Nicene Creed and the liturgical anaphora of St Basil the Great.
